1944 ~ CAROL MOEN ~ 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carol Jean Moen at the age of 75. She will be lovingly remembered by her partner, Paul Thibault, her two sons, Martin (Sookyung) and Kristian, two grandsons, Peter and Alan, sisters, Sophie (Arthur) Prizeman and Netilia McArthur, her daughter-in-law, Eventhia Werner and her sisters-in-law Elizabeth Ewasiuk and Faye Ewasiuk. She had many nieces and nephews. Carol was predeceased by her parents, Philip and Mary Ewasiuk, two brothers, Anthony Ewasiuk and Marshall Ewasiuk, her brother-in-law, John McArthur, and her ex-husband, Ingar Moen. Carol was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, and lived at various times in England, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and Nova Scotia. She was an artist and writer. Her art centers around the expressionistic depiction of figures, such as mystics, monkeys and birds, often combining a playful quality with dark undertones. While creating her work, the intuitive processes of addition, subtraction, scraping, gouging or overpainting would allow for new ideas - often based on a feeling of texture or colour - to emerge. As well as being influenced by a deep knowledge of art history, Carol's artistic practice was shaped by her early memories of Ukrainian Orthodox church services: the choir singing through much of the liturgy, the incense, the icons. Working across different forms and materials, such as painting, collage, assemblage and sculpture, Carol created deeply felt works of mystical and haunting beauty. Throughout her life, Carol took great enjoyment from teaching others, and sharing her knowledge, sensitivity and kindness. She was an avid reader of women writers, loved gardening and was a passionate advocate for animal welfare. The family would like to thank those who offered such generosity and support during Carol's final years struggling with the effects of dementia, including her kind friends, the caring staff at South Country Village and her loving care companion, Marcy Smith, at Extended Family Services Inc. Private family times of remembrance will be held. Anyone who wishes to make a donation in memory of Carol, and her love of animals, can do so by sending it to the Alberta S.P.C.A. - 17904 118 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5S 2W3.
