In memory of
Eva Marie McGrath
August 13, 1926 - February 03, 2019 - Age 92

Eva Marie McGrath (nee Francis) of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at the age of 92 years.

Eva the oldest of six children was born August 13, 1926 in Eatonia, Saskatchewan, raised and married on the Francis family farm near Mantario, Saskatchewan. She received her education up to grade 10 at Ranchview School and completed grades 11 and 12 in Alsask. She worked at the Saskatoon Sanatorium for the treatment of patients with tuberculosis before marrying Don McGrath on October 18, 1947. They resided in Mantario until moving to their new home on the farm near Laporte, Saskatchewan in 1961. Mom lived on the farm at Laporte until her move to AgeCare Columbia Assisted Living Lethbridge in 2006. She also resided at The View and St. Therese in Lethbridge until moving to The Wellington Medicine Hat in September 2013. Her last move in October 2016 was to AgeCare Valleyview Long Term Care Medicine Hat. Eva belonged to the Laporte Ladies Aid for many years. She had a love for flowers, especially petunias which bloomed profusely in her flowerbeds every year and she enjoyed gardening as well. She crocheted and quilted many blankets and quilts over the years for her family. She worked on puzzles, crossword puzzles and like her mother was a whiz at scrabble. She enjoyed crafting and we would come home to a beautifully decorated house and the best sour cream fudge every Christmas. Mom was also an excellent cook and prepared delicious nutritious meals and desserts for many family and friends with an all-time favourite being her roasted chicken dinner along with her crabapple jelly and amazing saskatoon pie. Despite many challenges in her life she worked hard and accomplished many things. She got great joy from doing things for her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She gave great care and love to Don in his final years and hardly left his side. The most important thing in her life was family.

Eva is survived by five children, Blaine (Marion) McGrath of Calgary, Monty (Layne) McGrath of Eatonia, Peggy (Don) Jensen of Standard, Pat (Murray) McMillan of Lethbridge, Gail (Vaughn) Thome of Medicine Hat; ten grandchildren Clint (Jen) McGrath of Dunmore, Kevin (Stephanie) McGrath of Dunmore, Daniel (Grace) McGrath of Eatonia, Charlene McGrath of Medicine Hat, Janelle (Wade) Evans of Okotoks, Trish (Lance) Larsen of Standard, Clark McMillan of Victoria, Alexandra McMillan of Lethbridge, Darren (Dana) Thome of Medicine Hat, Jared (Sara) Thome of Medicine Hat; as well as fourteen great grandchildren Nicole, Dakota, Rylan, Liam, Callum, Jack and Denzel McGrath, Rayna and Maren Evans, Bryar and Piper Larsen, Zoƫ, Jadyn and Weston Thome. She is also survived by her brothers Tom (Carrie) Francis of Mantario and Jim Francis of Campbell River; nephews and nieces Bill, Dean, Jack, Dan Francis, Cindy Thomson and Bob Cox; Don Lehr, Brian McGrath, Blair Bastian, and Carol Lodge. Eva was predeceased by her parents Ed (1980) and Laura (1983) Francis of Mantario, her husband Don McGrath in 2001; brothers Allan of Calgary (2000) and Donald of Mantario (2015); sister and brother-in-law Dorothy (Ed) Cox of Calgary (2012), sister-in-law Betty Francis of Campbell River (2012), sisters-in-law Louise (Harry) Lehr, Marie (Ted) Bastian and brother-in-law Jack (Eleanor) McGrath; nieces Florence Hummel, Nadine Rossel, Linda Boyko.

Sincerest thank you to Dr. Hirsch, all the nurses and staff for the excellent care she received while residing at AgeCare Valleyview in Medicine Hat. Our family also thanks the Doctors and Nurses at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for their exceptional treatment of Mom and her family. If you would like to make a donation in memory of our Mother it can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada or a charity of your choice.
