In memory of
Steven 'Steve' Mathison
December 25, 1977 - April 24, 2022 - Age 44

Steven “Steve” Robert Mathison of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at the age of 44 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Lisa, two daughters, Keira and Halle; his parents Sandy and Lorne Mathison, one sister, Deanna Mathison; his in-laws, Linda Ramnes and Daryle (Louise) Ramnes as well as numerous extended family and amazing friends that he loved. Steve was born in Milden, Saskatchewan and surprised his parents on Christmas day by arriving earlier than expected. His early years were spent in Conquest prior to moving to Coleville where he spent his elementary years before going to high school in Kindersley. He made many strong friendships and there was never a shortage of adventures, hockey, getting into trouble and the occasional scrap. After high school, he went on a trip of a lifetime, backpacking in Australia before coming home and moving to Medicine Hat in 1997. There he met Lisa, they quickly fell in love and were married in July of 2000. Keira was born in January of 2005, and Halle in June of 2008. Having a full house of girls was not going to change Steve’s love of everything outdoors and so as a family, many happy days were spent quadding in the mountains, ice fishing, hunting, hiking and trips on the Harley. He always loved it when his sister or his amazing friends and family could join in on the fun. No day could be better if he could cook an amazing meal over the fire. Through his various jobs in the oilfield he formed many connections and he was highly respected for his strong commitment to his work and being able to fix almost any problem. His dedication to his family and his work were incredible to a fault. Steve left this world much the same as he arrived, unexpectedly and on his own terms. He will be forever remembered for his huge personality, his ability to stir up shit, his larger than life laugh and his undying love for his girls, his family and his friends. A time of remembrance will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandstand Room at the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede Grounds. Message from Harmony Boisjoli April 27, 2022
Steve was a huge part of my adolescent years. From catching rides in his VW Bug to climbing the Damn in his jacked up truck, adventures were always had when we were with Steve. You never went hungry at DQ thanks to the Steve-O burger! Although his sheer size was intimidating to most, those of us that truly knew Steve knew he was a big softy. My thoughts and condolences go to his family. May you find comfort in each other in the days to come.

Message from Dave and Marian Barclay April 27, 2022
Our hearts ache for you on the loss of your son, Steven. We have never experienced a loss so tragic as this, so we can only imagine what you must be feeling. We wish we could take away the pain. Steven was such a happy young man when we knew him in Coleville. He was always polite and friendly. We remember him showing up every Halloween for one of Marian’s caramel apples. He came every year dressed in a costume until the one year, as a teenager he showed up with no costume. Marian joked he had to be in costume to get an apple. Steven never said anything, he just left only to return 10 minutes later with a mask to collect his apple! We fondly remember him as this friendly polite young man growing up in Coleville.

Message from Mark Ansara April 28, 2022
Lisa and family,

While we never met, I have known Steve at our Kearl worksite for several years. That friendship was building and I wish that I had more time to let it grow to learn more about your husband and your dad. While that can't happen, I am blessed to know I was in good company witb the person I knew he was. The messages posted here are confirmation of the person Steve was. I was saddened by this news today but I am extremely thankful for the countless conversations I had right up to our last day at work together. We never got out for our bike ride, but there will be one this summer in his honor.
