In memory of
Betty Brodin
November 20, 1929 - February 06, 2021 - Age 91

1929 ~ Betty Brodin ~ 2021

Betty Mabel Brodin of Medicine Hat passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the age of 91 years. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Sandra Hofer (Tony Davis), Linda (Mike) Baisley and Verna Scott; six grandchildren, Kristian, Dianne (Mark), Laurie (Fabian), Scott, Catherine (Les) and Stuart (Lisa); five great grandchildren, Olivia, Mason, Cohen, Adyson and Easton; her sister, Sonja (Henry) Rieder and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Ben and Signe Rud; her beloved husband Walter and son-in-law Don Scott.

Betty was proud to be the daughter of Norwegian homesteaders. Growing up and going to school in High Bank (Seven Persons area), she often shared childhood stories of her life in rural Alberta. Her family moved to Medicine Hat in 1949 where she worked at Taylor Brothers Grocery. In December 1950, she married the love of her life, Walter and moved to farm together in Orion. Betty was very involved in the Orion community ~ local hair stylist, cake decorator, seamstress, Women’s Institute, Community Association and school bus driver. Family and friends were her top priority and she cherished the traditions associated with both. Betty celebrated her family with immense love and pride.

In 1974, they moved to Medicine Hat where Betty managed a clothing store “Irene Hill” for many years. She continued to grow her circle of treasured friends. Betty loved to be involved in community and demonstrated a passion for relationships and self-giving. Whether it was travelling with the Good Samaritans, celebrating her Heritage in the Sons of Norway, or deepening her commitment to faith and church she did it with amazing energy and love. In 2014, she chose to make her new home at Meadowlands Retirement. Betty was known as a joyful and positive inspiration to staff and residents alike. She truly loved and felt loved by her Meadowlands’ family. Betty’s family thanks Meadowlands for their loving care and their companionship. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Betty, may make a donation to a charity of choice.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private funeral service will be held in Victory Lutheran Church (2793 Southview Drive SE) on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. James C. Bredeson, Chaplain Dallas Hjorth and Pastor Roland Weisbrot officiating. To Betty’s family,
My sincere condolences to you all in the loss of Betty. I only got to know her well, since 2015, when my Mom Jean Cameron, joined her in The Meadowlands. They had been friends long before becoming partners in crime there:). Their table of ladies were always laughing, and many Residents stopped by to grab a piece of joy as they left the dining room. I do know my Mom’s final years were greatly enriched by the fun she and Betty had together and collectively with their ‘Golden Girls’ as they called their group. It was a joy to watch them have so much fun during my visits. There is no doubt she will missed by you all.

Sandra, Linda, and Veronica,
I'm sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. Nothing ever quite prepares us for losing our loving Mothers. But I remember enjoying everyone's memories. Do you remember when the "do it yourself " shears became available? And somehow your Mom became the hairdresser of choice for the neighborhood. I still remember sitting in the chair and your Mom's voice as she cut my hair. This is both a funny and happy memory for me. (My school pictures show the results. :) And I also remember going to your house for music lessons, and seeing your Mom and Dad at all of the school and community events. Precious memories for sure. Much love to all of you and your families.

We are so sorry to hear of Betty's passing. I had such a good visit with her at Christmas time. Could easily spent an hour or more talking on the phone. Mom was so happy they were sharing a table, before the lock down. Mom also said that Betty went to visit her during lock down. I had to laugh! Glad she did, they had a wonderful visit. Our condolences to all your family.

To a positive and inspiring woman. I will remember days on the farm, my time working bow island and hanging with my aunt. She always inspired me to be the best and she believed in me threw every struggle. My fondest memory is butchering chickens at the farm, and for years I sent her chickens as a joke. I am certain she’s farming in heaven and I will continue to look up to her for her positive advice.

Betty was like my second mom during the summers I stayed at the farm. She taught me how to waltz, bandaged my nose when a hen pecked it, knew the best place to pick Saskatoon Berries and assured me that I wasn’t peeing blood after eating too many beets. I will always remember her laugh and smiling face. Deepest condolences to my cousins in their loss.

I will always remember Great Aunt Betty's warmth and love. You take for granted the times when you're little and you get to see family like her and Uncle Walter. Later in life you realize how precious those times and memories are. It meant a lot that whenever we spoke later in life, she always wanted to know how I was doing too. I hope the memories of her love for family and community bring everyone comfort, and I wish her and Uncle Walter a peaceful rest together in paradise.

Sandra, Verna & Linda, and the extended families:
Our sincere sympathies to you on he loss of your mom. She was a gem, precious to many -- family and friends. We were blessed to have had her touch our lives for our entire lifetimes. When little (6) she was a flower girl of Mamma's. Because she knew the south of Seven Persons pioneers (and was one of them) she relayed 'stories' of those days. The 'stories' are treasured. Betty will forever be loved and in our memories.
Thank you for sharing your mom's service online.

Betty also made my wedding cake, and when it landed on the floor at the dance, she made another one.i still have the top of it. My daughter Shannon used to call her Grandma Betty when we went to visit her at the dress shop.My 16th birthday was held at their farm.
