Betty Mabel Brodin of Medicine Hat passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the age of 91 years. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Sandra Hofer (Tony Davis), Linda (Mike) Baisley and Verna Scott; six grandchildren, Kristian, Dianne (Mark), Laurie (Fabian), Scott, Catherine (Les) and Stuart (Lisa); five great grandchildren, Olivia, Mason, Cohen, Adyson and Easton; her sister, Sonja (Henry) Rieder and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Ben and Signe Rud; her beloved husband Walter and son-in-law Don Scott.
Betty was proud to be the daughter of Norwegian homesteaders. Growing up and going to school in High Bank (Seven Persons area), she often shared childhood stories of her life in rural Alberta. Her family moved to Medicine Hat in 1949 where she worked at Taylor Brothers Grocery. In December 1950, she married the love of her life, Walter and moved to farm together in Orion. Betty was very involved in the Orion community ~ local hair stylist, cake decorator, seamstress, Women’s Institute, Community Association and school bus driver. Family and friends were her top priority and she cherished the traditions associated with both. Betty celebrated her family with immense love and pride.
In 1974, they moved to Medicine Hat where Betty managed a clothing store “Irene Hill” for many years. She continued to grow her circle of treasured friends. Betty loved to be involved in community and demonstrated a passion for relationships and self-giving. Whether it was travelling with the Good Samaritans, celebrating her Heritage in the Sons of Norway, or deepening her commitment to faith and church she did it with amazing energy and love. In 2014, she chose to make her new home at Meadowlands Retirement. Betty was known as a joyful and positive inspiration to staff and residents alike. She truly loved and felt loved by her Meadowlands’ family. Betty’s family thanks Meadowlands for their loving care and their companionship. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Betty, may make a donation to a charity of choice.
